About this filing

Tell HMRC when your company's business or correspondence address changes, and check every tax record it holds.

VAT changes must reach HMRC within 30 days. Our service helps a limited company update the address on one HMRC tax record: Corporation Tax, VAT or employer PAYE. You tell us which record, the old and new address and the date of the move.

We confirm we have authority to act for that tax, then prepare the update. HMRC does not charge for the update.

How to change your business address with HMRC

HMRC has to be told when a company's trading address moves. GOV.UK lists the taxes and schemes the change needs to reach, including Corporation Tax, PAYE for employers and VAT.

Most businesses do this through their HMRC online business account. GOV.UK says this covers changes to your correspondence address for all services apart from CIS. You can also write to HMRC or call the helpline for the tax concerned.

We act through our own HMRC agent access for the tax you pick, using whichever route HMRC accepts for that tax, online or in writing. We will never ask for your Government Gateway password.

Registered office, trading address and correspondence address

A limited company can have several addresses, and HMRC and Companies House hold them separately. The registered office is the address shown for the company on the public Companies House register. The business or trading address is where the company actually works. The correspondence address is where HMRC sends its letters for a tax.

If the registered office changes, you tell Companies House. GOV.UK says Companies House will then tell HMRC about the new registered office. That does not, on its own, change the trading address or correspondence address on your VAT or PAYE record. If those have also changed, they need updating with HMRC.

For Corporation Tax, GOV.UK puts Companies House first: changes go there before they go to HMRC. If the registered office is moving too, file that change first. Our registered office service (AD01) covers it.

Deadlines for telling HMRC about an address change

  • VAT: HMRC must hear about changes within 30 days. GOV.UK warns that a penalty may apply if you are late.
  • Corporation Tax and PAYE: GOV.UK sets no day limit for these, though the change must still be reported. Act promptly so letters, notices and reminders reach you.
  • Bank details, if they are changing at the same time: HMRC needs 14 days' notice. That is a separate update.

What you need to change your address with HMRC

  • Which tax record needs the new address: Corporation Tax, VAT or employer PAYE.
  • The reference for that record: the 10 digit Corporation Tax UTR, the 9 digit VAT number, or the employer PAYE reference (it usually looks like 123/AB456).
  • Whether the business address or the correspondence address is changing.
  • The address HMRC currently holds for that record. This is not always the registered office, so check a recent HMRC letter.
  • The full new address and the date of the change.
  • HMRC authorisation for us to act for that tax, or your agreement to complete it. We explain any further step HMRC requires.

One tax record at a time

HMRC holds an address against each tax separately. Changing it for VAT does not change it for PAYE or Corporation Tax. Each update through this service covers one tax record. If the company is registered for more than one, tell us about each record that needs changing.

CIS is handled separately. GOV.UK says contractors and subcontractors under the Construction Industry Scheme must tell HMRC about changes separately, and the online business account cannot be used for them. CIS updates are not part of this service.

After you ask us to update your HMRC address

Start by picking the company and the tax record, then give the old and new address and the date the change took effect. We check our agent access for that tax. If it is missing, we tell you what authorisation is needed before going further.

You review the prepared update and confirm it before we send it. HMRC decides when its record changes. Paying us, or getting a receipt for the request, is not proof that the address has been updated. Check your HMRC online account, or the address on the next letter HMRC sends.

If the company imports or exports and has an EORI number, GOV.UK says you must also tell the EORI team when your VAT details, such as your address, change. That is not part of this service.

Common HMRC address change mistakes

  • Assuming a new registered office at Companies House updates the VAT or PAYE trading address. It does not.
  • Updating one tax record and forgetting the others the company is registered for.
  • Missing the 30 day window for VAT because a move to new premises was not seen as a VAT change.
  • Entering the registered office as the current HMRC address when HMRC actually holds a different one.
  • Forgetting CIS, which must be updated separately.
  • Handing over Government Gateway sign-in details. An agent never needs them.

What this request covers

We check access to the selected tax record and prepare its address update. Tell us separately about any other tax records that also need changing.

Before you start

  • SimpleFilings must have the appropriate HMRC agent registration, account and service access before acting for you.
  • Your company must authorise us through the HMRC route required for this service. We will tell you if another step is needed.
  • Do not send us your Government Gateway password. We use our own agent access.

What is not included

A Companies House registered-office change, providing an address or mail-forwarding service, CIS updates, or updating every tax record automatically.

Fees

£4.99 SimpleFilings service fee per tax record. HMRC does not charge to change an address. The service covers one address update for one selected tax record. It does not cover changing your registered office at Companies House, providing an address or mail forwarding, Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) updates, or updating every tax record at once. Any tax or penalties the company owes HMRC are not included.

£4.99 SimpleFilings service fee. There is no HMRC application fee. Tax, penalties and other outstanding amounts are separate.

Total: £4.99. There is no HMRC fee for this request.

Step by step

  1. Find your company. Find your company by name or number. We fill in its public details from the Companies House register, such as the registered office, officers and people with significant control.
  2. Answer the questions. Answer only the questions we cannot fill in from the register, add any documents asked for and give the email address for your receipt and filing updates. Confirm that you are authorised to arrange the request and that you have checked and approve the details.
  3. Pay by card. Approve the details and pay the total shown by secure card payment. We check your answers before preparing the filing. There is no HMRC fee for this request.
  4. We submit to HMRC. We check your answers and the HMRC authorisation needed for this tax service, then submit to HMRC. Updates go to your email, and you can follow progress through your private request link. A payment receipt is not confirmation that HMRC has accepted the request.

Change a company address at HMRC: common questions

How do I update a limited company's address with HMRC?

Update it for each tax the company is registered for. GOV.UK says the HMRC online business account covers correspondence address changes for all services apart from CIS. You can also write to HMRC or call the helpline for that tax, or use an authorised agent.

Does changing my registered office update HMRC?

Companies House tells HMRC about a new registered office. Your trading address and the correspondence address on your VAT or PAYE records are separate, so update those with HMRC if they have changed too.

Is there a deadline for telling HMRC about a new address?

For VAT, yes: 30 days, and a late notice can lead to a penalty. Corporation Tax and PAYE have no day limit on GOV.UK, but the change still has to be reported.

Is there an HMRC fee to change a business address?

No. HMRC does not charge to update an address. Our charge is a £4.99 SimpleFilings service fee for each tax record you ask us to handle.

Do I need to change my address for VAT, PAYE and Corporation Tax separately?

Yes. HMRC holds the address against each tax record. Updating one does not update the others, so check every tax the company is registered for.

Can you change my address for CIS?

No. GOV.UK says CIS contractors and subcontractors must tell HMRC about changes separately. CIS updates are not included in this service.
