How to change a director's details at Companies House
CH01, "Change of director's details", is the Companies House form for updating the record of an individual who is already a director. It covers five things: the director's name, their service address, their usual residential address, their nationality, and the country or state where they usually live.
Companies House asks companies to file CH01 online. A paper form is still available, but paper takes longer to process, and a company in the PROOF (Protected Online Filing) scheme must file online.
The company must tell Companies House within 14 days of a change to a director's personal details. The date on the form is the date the change happened, such as the day the director moved, not the date you file.
What you need before you file CH01
- Give new forenames and the complete surname separately for a name change. For additional changes on the same date, upload the complete approved CH01 so every applicable detail can be checked.
- The company authentication code. It is used to file for the company.
- Which director the change is for, as they currently appear on the public register.
- The date the change took effect. It cannot be in the future.
- The new details: new full name, new service address, new home address, new nationality or new country of residence.
- If the service address changed, whether the home address also changed. The form needs either confirmation that the home address is unchanged, or the new home address.
- Nationality and country names taken from Companies House's standard list. Companies House says it may reject a filing that uses other wording.
- Details of anything else that changed on the same date, so it can go on the same filing.
A director's two addresses on the record
A director has two addresses on the record. The service address is the public correspondence address. It appears on the public register. It can be the company's registered office if the director agrees.
The usual residential address is where the director actually lives. Companies House does not show it on the public register. A PO Box, DX or LP number cannot be used for it.
For example, if a director moves home but keeps the company’s registered office as their service address, report the new home address and confirm the service address is unchanged. If a director moves house and uses their home as the service address, both addresses have changed. Report both, or the old home address stays on the public record as the service address. If the director wants their new home kept off the public register, give a different service address, such as the registered office.
Changing a director's name
If a director changes their name, for example after marriage or by deed poll, report the new full name on CH01 with the date it took effect. The form identifies the director by their current name on the register and the month and year of birth.
Directors must also verify their identity with Companies House. If the director verified under a previous name, use the optional identity-verification name notes. We check the name before anything is filed.
What CH01 is not for
- Appointing a new director. That is AP01.
- Recording that someone has stopped being a director. That is TM01.
- Changing a corporate director's details. That is CH02.
- Correcting a director's date of birth. That is a separate correction process, not a CH01 change.
- Changing the company's registered office address. That is a separate filing.
- Updating someone's details as a person with significant control. That is PSC04, even if they are also a director.
What happens after you start your CH01
Find your company, choose the director and tell us what changed and when. We check the details against the CH01 requirements and ask about anything missing or unclear. You approve the filing before it is submitted.
Nothing on the register moves until Companies House has accepted the CH01. A receipt showing it was sent is not the same as acceptance, so check the director's record afterwards.
From 18 November 2025, a company no longer has to keep its own register of directors. The details Companies House holds now serve as that record, which is one more reason to keep them up to date.
Common CH01 mistakes to avoid
- Updating the service address but forgetting the home address, or the other way round.
- Giving the new home address as the service address when the director would rather it stayed off the public record.
- Using the filing date instead of the date the change happened.
- Typing a nationality or country that is not on Companies House's standard list.
- Missing the 14 day window because nobody told the company about the move.
- Changing the director's details but not their PSC details when they are also a PSC.

Change director details (CH01): common questions
How do I change a director's address at Companies House?
File CH01 with the new address and the date it changed. Say whether it is the service address, the home address or both. You can file it yourself through Companies House, or use our service and approve the filing before we submit it.
Is there a Companies House fee to change director details?
No. Companies House does not charge to file CH01. If you use SimpleFilings, the only charge is the £4.99 SimpleFilings service fee.
How long do I have to report a change to a director's details?
14 days from the date of the change.
Will the director's new home address be public?
Companies House keeps the usual residential address off the public register. The exception is where the director uses that same address as their service address, because the service address is always public.
Can I change several details on one CH01?
Yes, if they all changed on the same date. The form has one date of change, so details that changed on different dates need separate filings, each with its own date of change.
Do I need to change the director's PSC details too?
If the director is also a person with significant control, their PSC record is separate. A change to their name or address there is reported on PSC04.
